ARCO – Atlantic Richfield Corp.
ARCO is one of the largest petroleum and fuels companies in the world,
owned and operated by BP, PLC. ARCO called upon Curt Pringle and Associates
to negotiate resolution of a potential “Superfund” site at
one of the company’s mining operations in northern Nevada. The company
implemented a comprehensive environmental remediation and restoration
project designed to prevent the need for a Superfund listing.
Curt Pringle and Associates developed an issue-oriented public education
and government relations plan for ARCO and its top officials. EPA ultimately
decided not to list the project as a Superfund site, an acknowledgement
of both the efforts of ARCO’s environmental remediation plan and
the impact of a state and federal government relations plan.
To achieve success, our team relied on extensive contacts with officials
at the Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Land Management, Nevada
Department of Environmental Protection and other community groups. Due
to the mine’s location near a large and active Native American tribal
community, our program also included an extensive community and government
relations element, designed to build consensus with the community and
its residents and foster a cooperative, future relationship with its leaders.
